A survivor shows us the position of his barack, and notes that our reconstruction does not have the correct shape and position yet.
After the liberation in 1945, the camp’ huts were burned down, nothing has remained there to remind us of that tragedy, now there is only a natural park with trees and flowers, nothing that helps us to imagine what Bergen Belsen once was. Our 3D reconstruction of the camp can be instrumental for the reconstruction of what Bergen Belsen once was, but it is also of fundamental importance to listen and preserve the memory of the survivors. We have interviewed some survivors that visited the Bergen Belsen Memorial center and used our virtual version of the reconstruction during the interview. In doing so we discovered that even having this minimal model of the camp helped survivors to bring back forgotten memories, a bit like how browsing old photographs can suddenly make you remember small events and quotidian details. more info on these interviews here
If you know family, friends or other people who might help us to collect more memories, or you are one of the witnesses yourself, we gladly invite you to collaborate and share your information with us. All information is handled with full respect, confidentiality and if requested, anonymity.
